DEFINING A SIGNAL

A signal is a specific, research-backed measure that helps assess how a company’s shares might perform relative to others. This could include how a company is valued against its cash flow, recent trends in its earnings quality or shifts in market sentiment towards it. Vinva’s investment team has developed more than 50 such signals, spanning valuation, sentiment, business conditions and earnings quality.

WHY SIGNALS ARE COMBINED, NOT USED ALONE

A measure like a price-to-earnings ratio can be flawed on its own; it doesn’t account for debt levels, growth prospects or differences between industries. By combining many independent signals, each capturing a different angle on a company, Vinva builds a more rounded view of relative value than any single measure could offer alone.

Take valuation as an example: rather than relying on one ratio, Vinva considers a suite of measures – cash flow yields, asset-based valuations and enterprise value models among them. Each on its own can mislead in certain circumstances, but combined systematically, they create a richer, more resilient view of relative value.

THE TEST EVERY SIGNAL MUST PASS

Every signal used has to meet a basic test before it earns a place in the process: it must make economic sense; and adds value into the future, rather than simply describing the patterns that already happened; hold up across different time periods and market conditions; and add something the process doesn’t already capture. This keeps the process focused on ideas with real reasoning behind them, rather than noisy patterns that may not hold up over time.

As markets, industries and data availability change, Vinva continues to research new signals and re-test existing ones, retiring anything that no longer meets the required standard.
